Sienza Energy, a Caltech-Incubated Battery Company Appoints former BYD Executive Samuel Kang as COO

PASADENA, Calif.May 5, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The Board of Sienza Energy, a Caltech-incubated battery company backed by Los Angeles-based philanthropist Patrick Soon-Shiong, unanimously approves Samuel Kang as its Chief Operating Officer.

In announcing Mr. Kang appointment, the Company stated: “Mr. Kang will serve at the Company headquarters in California and help build, operate and maintain Sienza’s battery pilot plants and manufacturing across the world with the goal of supplying innovative batteries to the EV and Consumer Electronics markets.”

Dr. Matthew Tasooji, Sienza CEO stated: “As we enter a new global paradigm for state-of-the-art green battery solutions in energy storage, electric vehicles, and consumer electronics, we see a massive opportunity for Sienza’s unique batteries across North AmericaAsia and the EU.”

Kang, who is also a Councilman and Mayor of Duarte, Calif., most recently served as the Head of Total Solutions and Head of School Buses for BYD. He is completing his Doctoral in Organizational Leadership from the University of Southern California.

Sienza Energy, a Caltech-incubated Next Generation 3D Nano-Strucured Battery Company, Receives Series A Funding from Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong

Pasadena-based Sienza Energy has received $5 million in Series A funding from Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, chairman and CEO of Nantworks, to accelerate the design and manufacturing of its game-changing new approach for batteries. Dr. Mory Gharib, founder and Chairman of the Board of Sienza stated: “We are honored and delighted to have a visionary like Dr Soon-Shiong invest in Sienza Energy.” Sienza Energy was incubated out of Caltech, and received funding from Kairos Ventures in an earlier round. Dr. Gharib, who is Hans W. Liepmann Professor of Aeronautics and Bio-Inspired Engineering at Caltech, puts his company’s vision in historic perspective: “We believe our unique 3D electrode architecture will change lithium battery technology the way the transistor changed vacuum tube electronics.”
